Ferme des Ormes

Description

The Ferme des Ormes is located in the heart of Quebec, in Pierreville, south of Lac St-Pierre, very close to Chenal Tardif, a branch of the St-François River. The soils of the region are mostly loam-sandy, an ideal ground for gardening. In addition, the immediate area of Lake St-Pierre has a microclimate that allows for more hasty and gentler springtime. It was under these favorable heavens, blessed for agriculture, that around 1860, the Comtois family came to found what would become the Ferme des Ormes.

From this family of builders was born an important man for Quebec and its agriculture: Paul Comtois, who became Lieutenant-Governor of Quebec in October 1961, and who died in the Bois-de-Coulonge fire in the suburbs of Quebec City on Frebruary 21st 1966 at the age of 70. The honorable Paul Comtois leaves behind a rich past of political and social actions that shaped the agricultural landscape of Quebec. He leaves behind the memory of a man attached to the land greatly involved in the agricultural world and obviously at the service of his community.

This is a short overview of the birth of the Ferme des Ormes. Following the tragic death of Paul Comtois in 1966, a friend of the Gérard Bourque family and his wife Marthe Ally will acquire this historic farmhouse. It was at this moment that the proper vocation of market gardening began.

At the end of the nineties, we were preparing for a farm transfer. We were four partners: Michèle Bourque, Jean Bourque, Josée Lanoie and Michel Deschenes. The youngest son, Stéphane Bourque, joined us a few years later to form the current quintet. We have been working together for a several years now. We share the same dreams: to found families and to take back the business of the Bourques.
